Emag spindle repair
Brochexpress is an independent workshop specializing in the repair, maintenance and diagnostics of Emag vertical lathe spindles — the German manufacturer that invented vertical pick-up turning, a benchmark in production automation for the automotive industry and series subcontracting.
Emag, inventor of vertical pick-up turning
TLDR: In 1992 Emag became the first manufacturer in the world to present a vertical lathe with a mobile pick-up work spindle, a concept that revolutionised conventional turning and today underpins its entire range of automated production centres.
In 1992, at the METAV trade show, Emag presented for the first time in the world a vertical lathe whose work spindle — known as pick-up — moves along the main axes itself and grips the workpiece directly, while the tool holders remain stationary. This revolutionary concept turns each machine into a genuine autonomous manufacturing cell, able to load and unload itself with no additional automation cost. Since then, Emag has extended this architecture to multifunctional production centres combining turning, drilling, milling, grinding, gear cutting and measurement on a single machine. The range today covers the modular VL lathes (workpiece diameter of 10 to 400 mm), the VSC series for parts up to 500 mm, as well as twin-spindle configurations (VL Duo) for parallel machining, widely used in the automotive industry and in the subcontracting of precision cylindrical parts (hubs, constant-velocity joints, differential gears).
A range of pick-up spindles designed for accuracy and continuous production
TLDR: Emag pick-up spindles are based on angular-contact bearings in a Tandem-O-Tandem arrangement with length compensation, mounted on a MINERALIT® polymer-concrete base for low-vibration machining, with power ratings that can exceed 34 kW depending on the model.
Emag pick-up work spindles integrate short bearing spacings, angular-contact bearings in a Tandem-O-Tandem arrangement and a support bearing at the spindle end with length compensation, forming a particularly rigid construction. The MINERALIT® polymer-concrete machine base absorbs machining vibrations, ensuring a long tool life and consistent turning quality. On twin-spindle models such as the VL 5 Duo, each working area is equipped with a 34.1 kW spindle delivering up to 593 Nm of torque at 40%, combined with a turret of twelve fixed or driven tools. Optionally, a hydrostatic-bearing spindle on the Z axis is available for machining parts in both the soft and heat-treated states.
Emag spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)
- Pick-up spindles of vertical lathes, modular VL range (Ø10 to 400 mm)
- Production centre spindles, VSC series (up to Ø500 mm)
- Twin-spindle spindles on Duo configurations, up to 34.1 kW
- Hydrostatic-bearing spindles on the Z axis (option)
- Spindles of combined horizontal/vertical turning centres, HVSC range
Interfaces and specifications
The Emag spindles we repair cover workpiece diameters ranging from 10 to 500 mm depending on the series (VL, VSC), with power ratings of up to 34 kW and torque of up to 593 Nm on the most robust twin-spindle configurations — specifications to be confirmed on quotation according to the exact reference of your machine.

Frequently asked questions
Do you repair the pick-up spindles that automatically load and unload workpieces?
Yes, we work on these spindles, taking into account their integrated gripping system and their movements along the main axes.
Do you work on the twin-spindle configurations (VL Duo) used in automotive production?
Yes, we diagnose and repair each of the spindles in these configurations, ensuring the synchronisation between the two working areas is preserved.
What is the average lead time for a full overhaul?
Allow around 20 working days in the workshop, depending on the condition of the spindle and the availability of parts (bearings, seals, specific components).
Do you work on the hydrostatic-bearing spindles of the Z axis?
Yes, we diagnose and repair these spindles, suited to machining parts in both the soft and heat-treated states.
Do you offer a preventive maintenance contract for a fleet of Emag machines in continuous production?
Yes, we set up preventive maintenance programmes tailored to your production rate, particularly relevant for automated lines running continuously.
