EWAG, over 75 years of Swiss expertise in precision tool grinding

TLDR: Ewag AG, founded in November 1946 as Edel-Werkzeug AG in Solothurn, is a benchmark brand in grinding, EDM, measurement, software and laser machining, with the legendary WS11 universal tool grinder, introduced in 1957, which rapidly gained a worldwide reputation.

Founded in November 1946 as Edel-Werkzeug AG by Messrs Pfluger, Vogt-Schild, Remund and Vogt, in Solothurn — a region renowned as a centre of Swiss watchmaking since 1888 — EWAG developed its first high-precision grinder prototype, the WS10, as early as 1954, giving rise in 1955 to the legendary WS11. Introduced at the Hanover fair in 1957, this remarkable universal tool grinder rapidly gained a worldwide reputation thanks to its outstanding performance, unmatched accuracy, versatility and robustness, becoming an indispensable tool for watchmakers and then for other advanced industries. In 1986, the first series-produced CNC machine (RS12) marked a major turning point, followed by the EWAMATIC CNC grinder in 1993, then the EASYGRIND, INSERT LINE and LASER LINE ranges. Part of the UNITED GRINDING group alongside its sister company Walter Maschinenbau, EWAG forms with Walter the Tool machining technology group, offering a broad product range covering grinding, erosion, laser, measurement and software.

A range of multi-axis spindles for grinding delicate and complex geometries

TLDR: The EWAG WS 11 universal tool grinder combines four linear axes with three to four rotary axes, making it possible to grind delicate and complex geometries in a single clamping setup, with extreme accuracy and kinematics that faithfully reproduce the finest shapes.

The manual EWAG WS 11 universal tool grinder, a historic reference of the Swiss watchmaking industry, has four linear axes and three or even four rotary axes, allowing it to grind delicate and complex geometries with extreme accuracy, all in a single clamping setup. Its well-conceived kinematics let it reproduce complex geometries very precisely, with high-accuracy measured values. On the more modern configurations derived from this technology, EWAG tool grinding spindles excel in producing and resharpening small rotationally symmetrical tools, while also being able to produce precision parts in small batches, with solutions covering both tool inserts (Insert Line) and laser processing (Laser Line Ultra) for the complete machining of cutting tools.

EWAG spindles and motor spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)

  • Multi-axis grinding spindles (4 linear, 3-4 rotary), WS series
  • Spindles of CNC grinders, EWAMATIC and EASYGRIND ranges
  • Spindles of tool insert systems, INSERT LINE range
  • Spindles associated with laser processing systems, LASER LINE range
  • Grinding spindles for small rotationally symmetrical tools

Interfaces and specifications

The EWAG spindles and motor spindles we repair cover multi-axis precision grinding configurations (up to 4 linear axes and 4 rotary axes) — exact specifications (rotation speeds, power ratings) to be confirmed on quotation according to the reference of your machine.
