On Jones & Shipman Ultramat universal cylindrical grinders, high-precision bearings are fitted to the spindle, the whole assembly synchronised by a belt between the drive motor and the headstock, with the option of programming either a speed in rpm or a constant cutting speed in m/s. All axes are controlled and positioned by Fanuc digital AC servo motors and Heidenhain absolute linear scales with 50 nanometre resolution. Internal grinding spindles at fixed or variable speed are available as an option.
