Lorenz spindle and motor spindle repair
Brochexpress is an independent workshop specialising in the repair, maintenance and diagnostics of Lorenz spindles and motor spindles — the historic German builder of gear shaping machines, today part of the Liebherr group.
Lorenz, the German benchmark in gear shaping
TLDR: Lorenz is a historic German manufacturer whose name remains tied to the gear shaping process, a generating method particularly suited to parts where limited tool clearance makes hobbing impossible — internal gear teeth above all.
Lorenz gear shaping machines, such as the LS series, are fitted with electronically controlled helical guidance, avoiding both the cost of acquiring various mechanical guides and the time needed to change them when moving from straight to helical teeth. In gear shaping, the generating motion relies on the meshing of the tool-equivalent gear with the workpiece, with the rotations of tool and workpiece conjugated in direction and angular speed ratio. The process is particularly well suited to internal gear teeth, where a hob simply cannot be brought out of the cut.
A range of Morse-taper shaper cutter spindles for generating by shaping
TLDR: Lorenz shaping machines use a Morse-taper shaper cutter spindle (MK4 or MK5), with stroke rates reaching several hundred strokes per minute, for gear diameters from 200 to 630 mm depending on the model.
Lorenz LS series shaping machines use a shaper cutter spindle housed in a Morse taper (MK4 on compact models, MK5 on higher-capacity models), with stroke rates of 75 to 1,000 strokes per minute depending on the model and the mode (roughing or finishing). Gear diameters handled range from 200 mm on compact models (LS 200) up to 630 mm on high-capacity models, for modules up to 8, with drive ratings of the order of 8 to 25 kW depending on machine size. A tilting table, available as an option on certain models, extends the range of applications.
Lorenz spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)
- Shaper cutter spindles in MK4/MK5 Morse taper
- Spindles working with electronically controlled helical guidance

Frequently asked questions
Do you repair shaper cutter spindles in MK4/MK5 Morse taper?
Yes, we work on these spindles, whatever the configured stroke rate.
Do you work on historic Lorenz shaping machines (LS 200, LS 400) still in production?
Yes, we diagnose and repair the spindles whatever the age of the machine.
What is the average lead time for a full overhaul?
Allow around 20 working days in the workshop, depending on the condition of the spindle and the availability of parts (bearings, seals, specific components).
Do you work on spindles dedicated to cutting internal gear teeth?
Yes, we diagnose and repair these spindles, suited to limited tool clearance.
Do you offer a preventive maintenance contract for a fleet of Lorenz machines?
Yes, we draw up preventive maintenance programmes tailored to your production pace.
