Niles-Simmons spindle repair
Brochexpress is an independent workshop specialising in the repair, maintenance and diagnostics of Niles-Simmons spindles — a century-old German manufacturer of heavy shaft lathes and horizontal turn-milling centres, a benchmark for crankshafts, railway axles and turbine rotors.
Niles-Simmons, over 185 years of German expertise in heavy turning
TLDR: Niles-Simmons Industrieanlagen GmbH (Chemnitz, Germany, over 185 years of experience, part of the Niles-Simmons-Hegenscheidt group) is a renowned manufacturer of powerful shaft lathes and horizontal turn-milling centres for the complete machining of heavy rotational parts: crankshafts, railway axles, turbine rotors and gears.
Based in Chemnitz and drawing on more than 185 years of experience in machine tool building, Niles-Simmons has been developing high-quality "Made in Germany" lathes and horizontal turn-milling machining centres for decades. The continuously refined Closed-Door-Machining concept enables the complete machining of a part in a single set-up, without manual intervention, reducing process times, simplifying manufacturing flows and replacing the use of several individual machines. The manufacturer is also a global system supplier for major projects in aerospace, automotive, rail, mechanical engineering and tooling/mould-making, with machine sizes ranging from the N10 series to the N60 series.
A range of powerful spindles for machining heavy rotational parts
TLDR: Niles-Simmons lathes cover turning lengths from 900 to 7,500 mm and swing diameters from 560 to 1,250 mm, with spindles available as direct motor-driven versions or high-torque geared versions with backlash-free rotation.
This machine concept was developed for the economical, powerful and high-precision turning of rotationally symmetrical parts, with special applications always achievable from size N10 to size N60. Niles-Simmons spindles can rotate both left and right (optionally), available either as a powerful direct-drive spindle motor or as a geared spindle with high torque and a backlash-free rotary axis. On the most complete configurations, an incremental turning length of up to 4,500 mm enables the machining of flexible shafts with one or two tool turrets, with the option of combining turning, cam profiling, keyway machining, drilling and milling thanks to driven tool spindles.
Niles-Simmons spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)
- Direct-drive motor spindles, N-series shaft lathes
- High-torque geared spindles, backlash-free rotary axis
- Driven tool spindles for combined drilling/milling
- Spindles for horizontal Turn-Mill turn-milling centres
- High-pressure internal machining spindles (up to 300 bar)
Interfaces and specifications
The Niles-Simmons spindles we repair cover turning lengths from 900 to 7,500 mm and swing diameters from 560 to 1,250 mm depending on the machine size (N10 to N60), with direct-drive or high-torque geared spindles — specifications to be confirmed on quotation according to the exact reference of your machine.

Frequently asked questions
Do you repair high-torque geared spindles with backlash-free rotation?
Yes, we work on these spindles, taking into account their specific precision requirements.
Do you work on driven tool spindles for combined drilling and milling?
Yes, we diagnose and repair these spindles, used on Turn-Mill turn-milling centres.
What is the average lead time for a complete overhaul?
Allow around 20 working days in the workshop, depending on the condition of the spindle and the availability of parts (bearings, seals, specific components).
Do you work on spindles of large-size shaft lathes (up to 7,500 mm)?
Yes, our team travels to diagnose and, whenever possible, work directly on site on these large-size machines.
Do you offer a preventive maintenance contract for a fleet of Niles-Simmons machines?
Yes, we draw up preventive maintenance programmes tailored to your production pace, particularly relevant for aerospace and rail workshops.
