Pietro Carnaghi, the Italian world leader in large vertical lathes

TLDR: Pietro Carnaghi (Italy) is a world-leading manufacturer of medium and large vertical lathes, with table diameters from 800 mm to 10,000 mm and a maximum turning diameter of up to 14 metres on twin-column configurations, as well as Unimill mobile-gantry milling machines.

A world leader in the production of medium and large vertical lathes, Pietro Carnaghi offers a range covering table diameters from 800 mm to 10,000 mm, with a maximum turning diameter of up to 14 metres on twin-column lathes. Since the 1970s, the guiding of the linear axes on every machine built by the manufacturer has relied on hydrostatic pads, helping to eliminate vibration and to guarantee constant geometric quality over time thanks to the absence of contact between the guideway surfaces. The manufacturer has also been producing, for several decades, mobile-gantry vertical milling machines known as Unimill, with column spans of up to 10,000 mm and table widths of up to 9,000 mm.

A range of multifunction turning, milling and grinding spindles

TLDR: In addition to the main turning spindle, Pietro Carnaghi vertical lathes can be fitted with universal heads, high-speed heads and grinding spindles (up to 3,000 rpm) held in an accessory magazine, covering a wide range of operations.

Thanks to the many accessories and configurations available, Pietro Carnaghi machines can carry out integrated operations on the workpiece: turning, milling, drilling and grinding, complemented by automatic part measurement. The high spindle rotation speed (up to 3,000 rpm) and its extremely precise balancing allow grinding operations to be performed to a high degree of finish, using grinding spindles held in the accessory magazine — suitable grinding motor spindles are also available to reach higher rotation speeds. Universal heads and high-speed heads, along with controlled-axis boring heads, complete the range of interchangeable tooling specific to these multitasking machines.

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair the grinding spindles held in the accessory magazine of vertical lathes?

Yes, we work on these spindles, taking into account their specific high-speed balancing requirements.

Do you work on the interchangeable universal heads and high-speed heads?

Yes, we diagnose and repair these heads, regardless of the machine configuration.

What is the average lead time for a complete overhaul?

Allow around 20 working days in the workshop, depending on the condition of the spindle and the availability of parts specific to these precision technologies.

Do you intervene directly on site for very large spindles (tables up to 10,000 mm)?

Yes, our team travels on site to diagnose and, whenever possible, intervene directly, avoiding the full removal of large, heavy spindles.

Do you offer a preventive maintenance contract for a fleet of Pietro Carnaghi machines?

Yes, we draw up preventive maintenance programmes tailored to your production pace and the criticality of your machines.
