SMEC, a Korean maker of lathes and machining centres

TLDR: SMEC (Changwon, South Korea) started in 1989 as the machine tool division of Samsung Heavy Industries. It builds CNC lathes, 5 axis and multi-axis turning centres, vertical machining centres and laser cutting machines.

SMEC, known as Samsung Machine Tools, started in 1989 as the machine tool division of Samsung Heavy Industries. Its head office is in Changwon, South Korea, with production lines in Gimhae and Daegu. The manufacturer develops and sells machining centres, CNC lathes, integrated equipment and robots, for a market it targets in more than sixty countries. It is distributed in Europe, notably in Germany and Switzerland, which explains why its machines are found in French and Swiss workshops.

Turning and turn-mill spindles

TLDR: On the SMEC lathes observed, the main spindle reaches around 3,000 to 3,500 rpm, with power ratings of several tens of kW, often complemented by a Y axis and live tooling.

Machine listings give a few orders of magnitude. A 2023 SL 3000 lathe is listed with a 3,000 rpm spindle, 18.5 kW continuous and 26 kW maximum, a 12 inch chuck and a 91 mm bar capacity. An SL 2500 lathe with Y axis is listed at 3,500 rpm, with a 5,000 rpm live tool spindle and a Fanuc 0i-TF PLUS control. These values vary with model and year: we confirm them from your machine nameplate.

On a turn-mill centre, the SMEC main spindle, its sub-spindle and each SMEC live tool motor spindle are diagnosed separately: wear on one does not always show on the others.

SMEC spindles and motor spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)

  • Main spindles of CNC lathes (SL series)
  • Main spindles and sub-spindles of turn-mill centres with Y axis
  • Live tool spindles (driven turret)
  • Vertical and 5 axis machining centre spindles
  • Spindles of SMEC integrated machines

Interfaces and specifications

Specifications from our examples: speeds of 3,000 to 3,500 rpm on the main spindle, 5,000 rpm on live tooling, power ratings of 18.5 to 35 kW depending on the model and the rating given in the machine listing. Exact values are to be confirmed on quotation, from your machine reference.
