Strausak, over a century of Swiss expertise in precision tool grinding

TLDR: Founded in 1923 as a repair workshop for the local watchmaking industry, Strausak diversified early on into high-precision machine tool construction, before specialising in CNC tool grinding (Fleximat, then U-Grind) and joining the Rollomatic Holding SA group.

Founded in 1923 as a repair workshop for the local watchmaking industry, Strausak diversified very early to offset the cyclical swings of that sector, developing automated machines over the decades, a universal tool grinder licence, then its own numerically controlled machines. The Fleximat grinding centre, forerunner of today's machines, built the manufacturer's reputation before giving way to the flexible U-Grind grinding centre, launched in 2012 — the year Strausak joined ROLLOMATIC HOLDING SA. The collaboration between Strausak and NUM on CNC controls is part of a long tradition, going back to the installation of the first NUM unit on a Strausak machine. After selling its watchmaking division, Strausak was able to focus exclusively on precision tool grinding, with applications spanning automotive, watchmaking, toolmaking, aerospace and medical.

A range of 5-axis grinding spindles, ISO 50 taper, up to 9,000 rpm

TLDR: Strausak CNC tool grinders, such as the Fleximat model, use an ISO 50 taper grinding spindle running from 1,000 to 9,000 rpm, with a direct drive B axis offering 0.001° resolution and a workpiece spindle reaching up to 1,000 rpm.

On the Fleximat grinder, the grinding spindle runs from 1,000 to 9,000 rpm (via a variable speed drive), with a 6 to 8 kW spindle motor and a 3.7 kW wheel motor, in ISO 50 taper, for a maximum wheel diameter of 160 mm. The machine's 5-axis architecture comprises a B axis with 470° of travel and 0.001° resolution, a C axis with the same resolution, and a workpiece spindle reaching up to 1,000 rpm. On the flexible U-Grind grinding centre, all 5 axes use direct drives, delivering high flexibility and cost-effectiveness, with quick and simple setup and changeover for particularly economical production — the machine suiting both resharpening and small batch production to very high precision.
