The main causes of abnormal spindle noise

Missing or degraded lubrication — dried-out grease, contaminated oil, a failing air-oil system on a motor spindle — deprives the bearings of the protective film they need to run quietly, and produces friction and then noise.
An imbalance of the mounted tool, or of the spindle itself after an impact or a poorly executed repair, produces a noise rhythmic at rotation frequency, easy to recognise once you know what to listen for.
A transmission fault, rarer, concerns mechanical spindles driven by belt or gear, as opposed to motor spindles with an integrated motor: a failing coupling, a slack belt or a worn gear can be the true source of the noise rather than the spindle.
