The central component of INDEX multi-spindle lathes is the spindle drum, a signature feature of the manufacturer: this compact drum delivers maximum precision at any station thanks to a Hirth serration, with fluid-cooled (or air-cooled depending on the model) motor spindles built directly into the drum. Continuously variable speed control, high drive power, high thermal stability, a compact footprint and freedom from maintenance are all criteria that characterise an INDEX multi-spindle machine. On the MultiLine range, the spindle bar capacity varies from 22 to 52 mm depending on the model, with maximum rotation speeds of 5,000 to 10,000 rpm. On the MS16-6 model, six synchronous motor spindles equip the drum, with five highly rigid CNC-controlled plunge or drilling slides. On the MS40-8 model, eight spindles deliver increased productivity, with an optimum rotation speed programmable individually for each spindle position and tool cutting edge, including during cutting. On the MS24-6 model, the arrangement of the slides in a working area with no central shaft — an INDEX speciality — allows several tools to be mounted on each spindle for maximum machining flexibility.
