Spindle repair: independent workshop or OEM service?
When a spindle or motor spindle fails, the reflex is often to call the machine builder's service department. At Brochexpress, we believe an independent workshop — one that is also a spindle manufacturer — offers a serious alternative, whatever the brand of your machine.
How an OEM service department is organised
TLDR: A machine tool builder's service department is organised around selling complete machines, not repairing components. It depends on its own supply network to obtain a replacement assembly, and applies that network's rates.
A machine tool builder designs, assembles and sells complete machines: the spindle is only one component among others in its catalogue, often bought in from a specialist supplier — Fischer, HSD, Kessler, GMN, IBAG, Step-Tec, Weiss and many others. When a spindle fails, the builder's service department generally orders the part or the replacement assembly from that same supplier, with the sourcing, logistics and possibly customs steps this involves. That organisation, built around selling new machines, shapes its lead times and labour costs.
Brochexpress is not only a repair workshop: we are also a manufacturer
TLDR: Unlike a pure maintenance workshop, Brochexpress masters the design of spindles and motor spindles themselves. That manufacturing capability goes beyond repair: it lets us remanufacture worn or obsolete parts, including when the original reference no longer exists.
Many of our customers do not yet know it: Brochexpress is not only a repairer, but also a manufacturer of spindles and motor spindles. That dual capability changes what we can offer. Where a conventional maintenance workshop replaces standard catalogue parts, our command of the design lets us recreate the components specific to your spindle — shaft, quill, rotor, bespoke sealing elements — when the original part is no longer available, no longer made, or the manufacturer has disappeared. Few repair workshops have that capability, and it is what allows us to save spindles others would write off for want of parts.
Expertise concentrated on the spindle, across every brand
TLDR: Brochexpress does not sell machine tools: we design, manufacture and repair spindles and motor spindles, and nothing else. That focus lets us strip down, diagnose and overhaul spindles of every brand and every generation, with a stock of generic components that depends on no builder's network.
Because our business focuses exclusively on the spindle and the motor spindle, we have built cross-cutting expertise across hundreds of brands — from manufacturers still in business (Fanuc, Okuma, Mazak, DMG Mori, Hermle) to historic brands acquired or gone (Jones & Shipman, Bechler, Mikron, Cincinnati Milacron). That knowledge is not limited to one technology: belt-driven mechanical spindles, integrated-motor spindles, very high speed grinding spindles, gear cutting spindles, multi-axis milling heads.
We work with high-quality generic components — precision bearings, seals, temperature and vibration sensors — available quickly, without depending on a proprietary reference. And when the part needed is specific to a spindle that cannot be found on the market, our design office redesigns and remanufactures it. That independence from builder networks is precisely what lets us work on more generations of machines, including those the manufacturer no longer supports.
What independence and manufacturing capability change for you
- Stated lead times: diagnosis on site within 48h, workshop repair in around 20 working days
- Controlled costs: a full overhaul generally costs a fraction of the price of a new assembly
- Every brand covered: whether your machine is still sold, has been acquired by another group, or its manufacturer has disappeared, we work on it the same way
- Remanufacture of obsolete parts: when a specific part no longer exists, we redesign and remanufacture it ourselves
- 12-month warranty on all our repairs, whatever the brand or the age of the spindle
- Objective diagnosis: with no capital ties to any manufacturer, we have no interest in steering you towards buying a new machine rather than repairing the one you have
When does OEM service remain the right choice?
TLDR: It would be dishonest to claim the independent workshop is always the better option. Machine under warranty, CNC retrofit, structural parts: OEM service keeps its place.
OEM service remains the right contact in several specific cases: a machine still under manufacturer warranty, where third-party work could void it; a CNC update or retrofit requiring software expertise proprietary to the builder; or highly specific structural mechanical parts — bed, slideways — that fall outside the spindle itself.
For everything concerning the spindle proper — fault diagnosis, overhaul, bearing replacement, rebalancing, sealing refurbishment, even complete remanufacture of an unobtainable component — an independent workshop that masters both repair and manufacture is a serious alternative, to be compared case by case.
Frequently asked questions
Does a repair by an independent workshop void my machine warranty?
It depends on your manufacturer's contractual terms and on the age of your machine. For a machine out of manufacturer warranty — the most common case when a spindle or motor spindle fails after several years in service — there is no such constraint.
Can you work on a spindle whose manufacturer has disappeared or been acquired?
Yes — this is one of the main reasons to turn to a workshop that is also a manufacturer: beyond common wear parts (bearings, seals), we can redesign and remanufacture ourselves the specific components that are no longer available anywhere else.
What are your lead times on a spindle or motor spindle?
We attend on site within 48h and offer workshop repair in around 20 working days, depending on the condition of the spindle and the availability of parts. An OEM service department, for its part, depends on its own supply network to obtain the replacement assembly.
Is a repaired spindle as reliable as a new one?
A thorough, complete overhaul — bearings, sealing, balancing, tolerance checks, and remanufacture of specific parts where needed — restores the manufacturer's original performance, with a 12-month warranty. It is a different solution from a new exchange unit, but just as reliable for the vast majority of industrial applications.
Do you actually manufacture spindles, or only spare parts?
Both: our design capability lets us remanufacture a specific worn part (shaft, quill, sealing element) as readily as design bespoke solutions when the situation calls for it.
Do you only work on the brands documented on your website?
No. We work across all spindles and motor spindles, every brand and every generation. If your model does not appear in our pages, contact us to check — the record of our past interventions goes well beyond what is published online.
A workshop that designs, manufactures and repairs — not one that sells machines
We are neither a distributor, nor a reseller, nor a partner of any machine tool builder. Our trade is the design, manufacture, repair and maintenance of spindles and motor spindles, which lets us give you an honest technical opinion: sometimes repair is the right answer, sometimes remanufacturing a part is called for, sometimes neither — but the choice is yours, with no commercial pressure tied to selling a new machine.
From our two sites in Beaurepaire (France) and Lussery-Villars (Switzerland), we work across all spindles and motor spindles, whatever the sector: aerospace, automotive, mould making, watchmaking, medical, heavy engineering or precision turning.
